I wouldn&amp;#39;t call reading anything a political act in and of itself. But reading is such a personal experience, and I think it scares people--the idea that I can read something and have ideas, emotions, and reactions to it that no one can predict or control. So even though Harlequin romances are just silly fluff reading on their surface, they still represent a certain freedom of mind and independence that undermines the idea that the reader--whoever he/she is--can&amp;#39;t think for themselves. I&amp;#39;m not about to espouse that they&amp;#39;re great works of literature, but romances HAVE been on the forefront of the fight for civil rights and social equality since, oh, Jane Eyre maybe? Including today when the up-and-coming romance sub-genre is GLBT. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My point is, books represent ideas and free thinking, whether they&amp;#39;re &amp;quot;good&amp;quot; books or not. But I do agree with you that Manguel&amp;#39;s idea that all reading is political is a stretch. It sounds like there&amp;#39;s a strong point to be made in that book, but he went off in the wrong direction and failed to make it effectively.</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/4972764383963459152/3960674292122918416/comments/default/2913008051237659850'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/4972764383963459152/3960674292122918416/comments/default/2913008051237659850'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.bookphilia.com/2009/11/reading-as-politcal-actthe-political.html?showComment=1259196508686#c2913008051237659850' title=''/><author><name>heidenkind</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/09494625457587427781</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:extendedProperty xmlns:gd='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005' name='OpenSocialUserId' value='08707060417597049178'/></author><thr:in-reply-to xmlns:thr='http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0' href='http://www.bookphilia.com/2009/11/reading-as-politcal-actthe-political.html' ref='tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4972764383963459152.post-3960674292122918416' source='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/4972764383963459152/posts/default/3960674292122918416' type='text/html'/></entry></feed>
